State-owned cement producer PT Semen Gresik will build a packing plant in Banyuwangi, East Java, to serve market demands in Eastern Indonesia, including Banyuwangi and its surroundings, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara.The Head of PT Semen Gresik Communication Division Syaifudin Zuhri added that Banyuwangi was chosen because the area is strategically placed to reach eastern Indonesia.
“The evaluation to select Banyuwangi was carried out five years ago,” Syaifudin told Tempo yesterday.
Another reason, according to him, was that cement shipping to eastern Indonesia had been disrupted because of the Lapindo mudflow in Sidoarjo.
Semen Gresik is still taking care of the factory building permit.
